Chapter 1. Dissociative Disorder in the Modern Era (10)

The enigma of dissociation holds a key to understanding the connection between mind and body

Before ending this chapter, I would like to make some statement that connects the discussion of this chapter to the future. In my view, understanding dissociative disorders in depth might lead us to solve some of the critical problems of psycho-soma connection. No psychiatric disorder has better characterized by its nature of straddling and encompassing psychological and physical symptoms.
The number of academic reports of the treatment of dissociative disorder is increasing in Japan, but it is uncertain if the actual number of serious dissociative cases such as those with DID is increasing or not as statistical data is lamentably lacking. More and more clinicians nowadays are showing curiosity and interest in dissociative disorders, but still many DID patients are needing to actively seek out to find informed clinicians to get a proper treatment. However, as the educational opportunities are increasing, there will be more clinicians capable of treating dissociative patients in the near future.
There is an urgent need for further research as well as collection of epidemiological data concerning dissociative disorder. Biological and brain-imaging research would be further needed. Probably, the mechanism of dissociation is so complicated and confounding that it would still take some time for us to really understand it on a deeper level. I believe that dissociation can be a hidden “operation system” in our brain that all of us possess, that explains why its manifestation is so widespread and protean, while patients with dissociative disorders appear to be just like one of us: they are so natural and humane.

  1. Dear Mr.Okano
I want you please to collect more evidence from clinical cases. The problem is that current clinicians in Japan whether is able to recognise it. They may become to be subverted the concept of DD far.
Yes. They are only a human existence.
    Thanks.
